In 1905 the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden happened without much drama. King Oscar II was deposed, as he could no longer fulfill the requirements of the Constitution by providing Norway with a government. The union was ended by Norway June 7. 1905, and formally by both countries October 26. the same year. Norway finally achieved independence.

This occasion, of course, needed a commemorative coin was. The first came in 1906. It became so popular that a new one had to be made in 1907. A third and special 2 Kroner coin with crossed rifles and a cavalry saber on the reverse was also made. This coin was distributed to the soldiers who had stood guard at the Swedish border in 1905, as Norway declared it’s independence.
